I met with the teacher at Sylvan Learning Center to review the results of M's evaluation. It will take approximately 194 hours to bring M up to speed (just for reading). The program will run us nearly $10,000!!! I utterly wish I could afford that because he deserves a break in his little life... He deserves more than what he has been given! I feel so helpless!!!
So, after taking a deep breath we have decided to impliment some strategies at home to help him learn to read better. At the end of last year of kindergarten we had withdrawn M and began homeschooling him. We utilized the k12 program (an awesome program that is perfect for inexperienced home educators like myself). Even though M had attended a regular kindergarten through last February k12 required him to start over. So, we got many wonderful supplies to help educate M, about 1/2 of which we did not have to return. One of the things we were able to keep was the Phonics workbook and teacher's book. So, we're going to pull that back out and use it to give M extra education on Saturdays and Sundays.

Yes, It's that extra stuff we do that lets us earn the title of 'Mom' not just Mother. Sometimes I think it's easier not to have a weekend, it throws Acer all off schedule.

Please don't beat yourself up.. we do the best that we can and and our kiddos are doing great. Tell me more about the HS program you are using... cause I am feeling lost!!
194 into 52 week mean that if you can do 4 hours over a weekend, you'll have him up to speed in under 2 years. I think it's very do able.

I found you through Carol's blog and she often talks about how wonderful she thinks you are. We are currently in the process of moving my daughter from public school to a private school that specializes in teaching children with learning disabilities. Here in Florida you can apply for the McKay scholarship to receive funds to pay for private school tuition. The scholarship amount is based solely on your child's IEP at the time you apply. Maybe there is something similar in your area.
Also, we have found that it speeds things along when you consult a specialist outside of the school system. Usually specialists are sensitive to what you need in the school system for your child and are willing to work with you to provide a diagnosis that will be recognized by the school system. You will have to pay out of pocket, unless covered by insurance, but it will get done quickly with a sympathetic specialist who wants to get your child into the program, not keep him out. A good neurologist would be able to give you an ADD or ADHD diagnosis.
